How did you become involved with decoration?
I have always had a passion for the world of interior design. Since I was a child I have been captivated by beautiful interiors. I opened my first interior decoration shop about 25 years ago in Morocco, then my family and I settled in Spain in 1999 and since then I have been working almost all the time in this sector. For the last 12 years I have been working as an interior designer in an international furniture company (Roche Bobois). About one year ago I felt that I needed a new challenge in my life and, after brainstorming with my family and friends, we thought it would be a good idea to open a shop with decorative lighting and attractive complements for the home – all those things you need to make your home special.
What kinds of products and services do Magyk offer?
The main product at Magyk is the world of decorative lighting. Decorative lighting is indeed a world, because you cannot even imagine how many beautiful and different lighting possibilities exist. Our goal is to create a selection of different kinds of decorative lamps and lights which are different from those available in conventional lighting shops. We present the lamp in an atmosphere with complements for decoration and pieces of furniture, so you will appreciate the real beauty of the lighting.
This means that we also sell other products apart from lighting: home textiles, wallpapers, complements, mirrors and art works, candles, furniture (for outdoor and indoor use), and wall and TV units. Many lighting options, and even furniture, can be adapted to the personal needs and tastes of the client. We pay a lot of attention to all these “small details”, which are really important to add a personal touch to your interior.
Many of our new customers who come to visit our shop are pleasantly surprised by this new concept, and by discovering lamps they have only seen in magazines. Our commitment is to help our clients make their homes different, adapted to their personal lifestyle and taste. A home should be a reflection of your own personality and not an exhibition of furniture.
How do you keep up with latest trends in design?
The most important updates are at the international fairs, which every professional should attend at least one or twice a year. I go to Maison & Objet in general once a year and I have been to the international Euroluce fair in Milan this year. It is really impressive to see all the different possibilities for lighting and decoration. There are so many things that, even after spending a week there, you can be sure you have not seen everything. The good thing is that you catch all the latest trends and evolutions, and gain inspiration. The bad thing is that in the end you always have to make a small selection – and this is really difficult with so much choice. But we try to manage it. Eventually we always return with loads of catalogues and ideas; tired, but with plenty of enthusiasm.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
The most important thing is when our client is satisfied with the result of our work. In general I do not really like the word “decorator”. Decoration must be adapted to each person with all their personal needs and preferences – their lifestyle.
For me, to decorate means to help and advise but not to decide – the final decision about the interior design of a space should belong to the person who lives there. An interior designer should give ideas and inspiration and help people realise them.
What are your plans for the future of Magyk?
We will try to improve our selection of lamps and decorative lighting, and we want to expand our selection of furniture and offer some exclusive items which you can only find at Magyk Lumière. Our personal attention to clients will also be improved, by hiring more staff and continuing to ensure interior projects are adapted to their needs.
Light is one of the most important factors in architecture and interior design. We should play with light, creating rhythm and not just a uniform space of light. The right lighting creates emotion and should not leave you with a sense of indifference.
